The Factory of the Future is Already Here: AI and Manufacturing between Innovation and New Transparency Obligations
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept but an operational reality that is revolutionising the manufacturing sector. From assembly lines to logistics, AI is unlocking levels of efficiency and customisation that were unthinkable only a few years ago. However, this wave of innovation brings with it the need for a clear regulatory framework which, in Italy and across Europe, is beginning to define the new boundaries of responsibility and transparency for those who use these technologies.
The AI Applications Transforming Production
Manufacturing companies are embracing AI to gain a decisive competitive edge. The applications are manifold and touch every stage of the production process, leading to a significant reduction in operating costs and to greater flexibility:
- Predictive Maintenance: By harnessing Machine Learning to analyse real-time data from machinery sensors, companies can anticipate failures before they occur. In a car manufacturer, for example, this translates into fewer unplanned production stoppages and a noticeable increase in plant efficiency.
- Optimised Quality Control: AI-based computer vision systems inspect products with a precision and speed superior to the human eye, identifying imperceptible defects and ensuring high quality standards.
- Supply Chain Optimisation: Intelligent algorithms analyse historical and real-time data to forecast demand more accurately. This makes it possible to optimise inventory management, cutting storage costs and improving the timeliness of deliveries.
- Digital Twin: Creating virtual replicas (Digital Twins) of machinery or entire production lines makes it possible to simulate scenarios, test changes and optimise processes before applying them in the physical world, minimising risks.
AI, including in its generative form (GenAI), is also democratising access to data, allowing employees at various levels to make use of the technology, for instance through the use of "copilots" for assistance.
The New Regulatory Landscape: Mandatory Transparency
While innovation moves fast, regulation is adapting to guarantee a responsible and trustworthy use of Artificial Intelligence. The EU AI Act and recent Italian national legislation (such as Italian Law no. 132/2025) introduce new and stringent obligations that cannot be ignored, particularly for the professionals who support manufacturing companies.
The Transparency Obligation for Professionals
The fundamental turning point concerns the introduction of a disclosure obligation for all professionals (consultants, lawyers, accountants, etc.) who use AI systems in carrying out their engagements.
As of key dates (such as 10 October 2025 in Italy under Italian Law no. 132/2025), anyone using AI must:
- Inform the Client: Provide a clear, simple and understandable disclosure explaining how, for which activities and with what limits AI is used within the professional service.
- Ensure Human Primacy: Guarantee that the use of AI remains instrumental and supportive and that the human judgement and intellect of the professional always prevail in the final decision. This aims to preserve the relationship of trust between professional and client.
- Document and Trace: Maintain accurate documentation (an AI register) of data sources, model versions and decisions taken with the aid of AI, ensuring traceability and accountability.
The AI Act and Risk Management on the Factory Floor
For companies themselves, especially those deploying high-risk AI systems (such as those that could have significant impacts on worker safety or on critical product quality), the obligations are even stricter, in line with the AI Act:
- Risk Assessment and Mitigation (ex ante).
- Detailed Technical Documentation on the architecture and the datasets used.
- Registration in a European public database (for high-risk systems).
- Mandatory Human Oversight of the results.
The Challenges: Data and Skills
Despite the enormous benefits, large-scale adoption presents its challenges. The main one is data quality: for a reliable algorithm, data must be accurate, complete and well integrated into company systems.
On the human resources side, the skills gap calls for investment in continuous training of staff (also supported by incentives such as the Transition 5.0 Plan in Italy), both for workers required to interact with new interfaces and for the managers and professionals who must interpret and validate the AI output.
Conclusions: AI as an Ethical Ally
AI is establishing itself as the strategic ally of modern manufacturing, driving companies towards the efficiency and sustainability paradigms of Industry 5.0. However, integrating these technologies cannot disregard compliance with an increasingly well-defined ethical and legal framework.
Transparency legislation is not a brake on innovation but a catalyst for conscious innovation. The obligation to inform, document and guarantee the centrality of human judgement only strengthens trust in the technology, making AI a powerful yet responsible tool in the hands of the "Factory of the Future".
